Belém is home of the great Portuguese explorers and in particular it’s the place where Vasco da Gama set off to discover India in 1497 and Cabral departed to find Brazil in 1499.

Belém is one of the most important historical districts in Lisbon and indeed Portugal. This district is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery plus the impressive Monument of Discoveries. You can visit all three of these sites in a morning as they are close to each other and make sure to take the elevator to the top of the Monument of Discoveries for incredible panoramic views of Belém and the river Tagus.

When in Lisbon, you’ll be sure to have noticed the small custard tarts called Pastel de Nata. These delicious cakes originated from the district of Belem and when you are here make sure to visit the original and world famous bakery of Pasteis de Belem which dates back to 1837. They say that this bakery sells 20,000 Pastel de Nata per day and this can double in peak season.

In addition to the main landmarks, Belem offers scenic waterfront views, charming cafes, and a vibrant atmosphere. Its rich history and cultural significance make it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Lisbon. It’s also a flat area and easy to walk from one site to the other.

It’s recommended that you get an early start if you are visiting Belem as the area can get very busy with tourists and the queue for Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery can build up quickly. But don’t let this put you off and make sure to visit Belém on your Lisbon break.

Make sure to bring water with you in the summer months.
