Located on the banks of the Tagus, this district is a bustling area of Lisbon with markets, bars and restaurants. The district plays an important role as a commuter hub for the city with the station of Cais do Sodre housing Train, Metro and Shuttle Boat services. You can catch the train to Cascais from this station or you can hop on the boat to Cacilhas which is a town on the far side of the river.
The focal point of Cais do Sodre is Time Out market, locally know as Mercado da Ribeira. The market hosts a spectacular food hall with over 40 eateries and bars to choose from. Many of the eateries are run and owned by renowned Portuguese chefs and this allows you to sample some of their signature dishes at very affordable prices. The seating area is communal and there’s always a great atmosphere.
The market hasn’t forgotten it’s heritage and you will also find the traditional fish, fruit and flower markets in the same building, so do make the effort to visit Time Out, you won’t be disappointed.
Cais do Sodre has been rejuvenated and the city has introduced new public benches along the river bank and promenade, providing a great place to relax, catch some sunshine and people watch. At weekends you may also find a craft market adjacent to Time Out or on the promenade by the river.

You’ll also find some great bars and restaurants down here, notably Ibo which specializes in Mozambican seafood and next door is a welcoming bar called Vestigus. The bar has riverside seating on a shaded deck where the river laps onto the bank with the arrival of the local shuttle boats.
Cais do Sodre was the historical hangout of Portuguese sailors, so to say the least, it’s always been a lively spot and when the sun sets this remains the same today. This district is home to Pink Street and if you want to party through the night, you’ll most probably find yourself here at some stage.
