Known for its innovation and luxurious offerings, the café quickly became a popular spot for the city's elites. Upon Baltazar's death in 1869, his youngest son, Baltazar Castanheiro Júnior, took over, enhancing the café's reputation with modern amenities, such as installing one of Lisbon’s first telephones in 1871.

His son also introduced the famous Bolo-Rei, a traditional Portuguese cake, still made today using the original recipe which he brought from France.

Baltazar Júnior continued to enhance the cafés prestige by becoming the official supplier to the Portuguese royal family in 1873. The Confeitaria Nacional has continued to thrive under successive generations of the Castanheiro family, contributing significantly to Lisbon’s cultural and culinary heritage.
