Ginjinha - Cherish the Cherry

It all begins with an idea.

Ginjinha is a traditional Portuguese cherry liqueur - Developed by a chemist and popular with locals.

Ginjinha is a traditional Portuguese liqueur which was created by a Lisbon pharmacist in the 20th century. It’s popular with the locals and tourists alike and although you will find the drink in most bars and cafes in Lisbon, the traditional establishments are tiny bars and the most famous is called “A Ginjinha”, which is located in Rossio Square.

Ginjinha is very much considered to be part of Lisbon’s heritage and culture. The drink is served in small shot glasses and either sipped at a small counter or outside the doorway on the street. Tourists will often be offered their Ginjinha in a small chocolate cup, which ads a little extra to the flavour and if you are lucky a whole cherry from the bottle will reach the bottom of your cup!

A shot of Ginjinha is very affordable, usually between €1.50 - €2.00 and you can try it at any time of the day, morning, noon or night, just like a Lisbon local.
