Jerónimos Monastery is another UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a fine example of Portuguese Gothic architecture, located on the banks of the river Tagus in the parish of Belem. The monastery is one of the most prominent examples of the Portuguese Gothic style of architecture in Lisbon and it was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.

The construction of the monastery and church began in 1501, and was completed 100 years later. King Manuel I selected a religious order of monks to occupy the monastery whose role it was to pray for the King's eternal soul and to provide spiritual assistance to navigators and sailors who departed from the port to discover lands around the world.
The monastery is vast and the queues to visit build up quickly so it is advised that you get there early so that you can get more out of your day. The district of Belem is packed with things to do, including The Monument of Discoveries and Belem Fort which is another UNESCO site, all of which are only a few minutes walk apart.

If you walk out of the Monastery, turn to your left and only a stroll away you find the infamous café Pastéis de Belém where they make incredible Pastel de Nata, do not leave this district without trying these delicious custard cakes.
