Largo do Carmo is a beautiful square full of history and charm in equal measure.
Largo do Carmo is where the Carnation Revolution of 25th April 1974 culminated and it’s always great to spend time up here and soak in some of the history of Lisbon. It’s because of the bravery of men such as Lisbon hero Captain Salgueiro Maia who ended a 48 year dictatorship, that you can enjoy a cold beer at the Kiosk located here.

Largo do Carmo is a small but beautiful square in the heart of the city and it's a lovely place to take some time out and relax with a cold drink on a warm day at one of Lisbon's trademark Kiosks. Generally there are buskers gently entertaining folk and we recommend you visit this beautiful square when in Lisbon.
In late spring the Jacaranda tress burst out in a vibrant purple flower and ads another dimension to this elegant square. These trees line many on Lisbons squares and streets and visiting in late spring, when it’s not too hot, is a real treat and makes for fabulous photos.
Directly adjacent to Largo do Carmo are the ruins of Carmo Convent which formed part of the walls of this ancient city. Although destroyed in the Earthquake of 1755 what remains Carmo Convent is very much worth a visit. In summer there may be a light show called ‘Lisbon Under the Stars’ which depicts the history of Lisbon. The show starts after nightfall and if it is on, then it’s a must do for any visitor to Lisbon.

There is an entrance beside where the sentry guards are standing in the square. Here you'll find a museum dedicated to the Republican Guard and it's free admission. It's an interesting museum and only takes a few minutes to look through, so do go inside to learn a little more about the Carnation Revolution.
While in Largo do Carmo why not take advantage of visiting the platform at the top of the Elevator Santa Justa. You can access the platform via the walkway adjacent to the Kiosk. It’s the perfect way to skip the torturous queues at the base of the Elevator and we highly recommend you take this option. The views at the top of the platform are great and you can look over the river Tagus and the rooftops of ancient Alfama.
