Currently the Lisbon Cathedral is a Roman Catholic institution but this was not always the case. From the 8th to 12th century Portugal was under Arabic rule and was essentially a Muslim state which tolerated Christians. In 1147 and backed by Rome there was a revolt which took Lisbon and Portugal back into the control of the Catholic Church. Although damaged, the Cathedral has managed to survive several earthquakes and is a mix of multiple architectural styles. The cathedral is the oldest in the city.
Lisbon Cathedral, is locally known as "Sé de Lisboa," and is one of the city's most iconic landmarks. Originally built in a Romanesque style, it has undergone several renovations over the centuries, incorporating Gothic and Baroque elements.
